July 5th to July 20th, 2009 marks this year’s Eat Local Challenge!

The Eat Local Challenge is hosted by food co-ops around the nation. The purpose of this event is to raise awareness and promote eating foods grown by local farmers.

If you are an avid locavore (someone who makes it a point to eat local foods), you are encouraged to eat four out of five meals with local food. If you are a novice, start out by eating five meals a week made with local foods. If you are somewhere in between, create your own goal.

Are you interested? Visit a co-op near you! Here are some locations in Tucson you can obtain locally grown foods:

Food Conspiracy Co-op in Tucson (Open every day from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.)
412 N. 4th Ave., Tucson, AZ 85705. Or call 520-624-4821.

If you are not in the downtown area, you can always buy locally grown foods from Whole Foods Market in Tucson:
3360 E Speedway Blvd, Tucson. Or call (520) 795-9844.
7133 N Oracle Rd, Tucson. Or call (520) 297-5394.

In addition, Whole Foods Market has a ton of locations in Phoenix.

Also, wherever you are in Arizona, you can still obtain locally grown foods from Farmers Markets in your area.

Pledge to eat as much as you can from locally grown foods!

A sincere ‘thank you’ to all those who made the Green Media Alliance of Tucson green marketing event a great success! The event started out with an informative 3-hour green marketing 101 workshop by the nation’s leading expert on green marketing and innovation, Jacquelyn Ottman. The workshop was followed by a great opportunity for Tucson business leaders to network and to learn about the great eco-responsible businesses in Tucson.

At noon, the luncheon featured a keynote speech by Jacquelyn Ottman, which highlighted ways through which businesses can use sustainability as a pathway to business growth and a way to help businesses thrive in these tough economic times.

It was so wonderful to see more than 200 business leaders in the Tucson area come together at this event. The event was featured on the 6 pm KGUN9 news and the video clip is available online.

The event was a great success. I would like to send a sincere thank you to all those who made the event a great success. Particularly, I would like to acknowledge our great sponsors: Doubletree Hotel Reid Park, Cox Communications, Wells Fargo, Arizona Lithographers, Tucson Electric Power Company, Arizona Party Rental, Elastek, Legendary World Travel, Seaver Franks Architects, and Schaffer Dry Cleaning & Laundry.

We are very proud of our great sponsors! In fact, in the next couple of weeks, I will post blog entries highlighting the sincere efforts that each and every one of our sponsors is conducting toward greener and more eco-responsible business practices.

For additional information, please visit the Green Media Alliance of Tucson website.

The Green Media Alliance is a local organization in Tucson composed of Cox Media, the Tucson Green Times newspaper, Mrs. Green Goes Mainstream Radio Show, Who’s Green? (WhosGreenAz.com) and AdVision Outdoor.

We are very excited about our partnership! Together, we are working toward providing businesses and individuals with the education and resources that will help build a sustainable community and preserve our planet’s resources.

We are an ambitious bunch and we have many goals and objectives. One of our goals is to present special events to help educate individuals, businesses, and organizations, and that provide resources for building a stronger, more sustainable Tucson community.

This award is one of the 41 recently announced national innovation grants (funded by Toyota). It is a community-driven project that incorporates the best sustainability practices, such as water conservation, rain-water harvesting, and landscaping with native plants.

The project will be coordinated by the Tucson Audubon Society. For more information about the Tucson Innovation award, please visit TogetherGreen: Community Conservation in Tucson.

In addition, Phoenix also received a TogetherGreen Innovation Grant that will be coordinated by Audubon Arizona (National Audubon Society) and aims to raise awareness of the human-caused water pollution and its consequences on the environment. The project will be centered in the heart of Phoenix’s Rio Salado Habitat.

The Tucson-based The Food Conspiracy is coordinating the Eat Local Challenge in Southern Arizona. What is the Eat Local Challenge?

It’s a chance to commit to eat foods and produce grown locally. You can sign up to participate in the challenge, where you will be able to list your goals, to which you would like to commit.

If you live in or around Tucson, The Food Conspiracy will be stocked with locally-grown foods and produce. If you live in other parts of Arizona, Local Harvest will help you locate farmers markets in your area, where you can buy locally grown/produced groceries and foods.

Eating locally-grown produce has many benefits. It is healthier and definitely more eco-friendly than produce that travels thousands of miles to reach you. Not to mention that you would be supporting your local economy.

Make a commitment today to change a few of your shopping habits and eat more local foods.
